In the Bible, Adam is the first human being created by God and a central figure in the story of creation and the origin of humanity.
Who is Adam?
- First Man Created by God
Adam was formed by God from the dust of the ground and given life by God’s breath.“And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.”

God placed Adam in a beautiful paradise, the Garden of Eden, to care for it and enjoy fellowship with Him. - Given Responsibility and a Command
Adam was tasked with naming the animals and was given authority over creation. God gave him one command: not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 2:16–17). - First Human Relationship
God created Eve, the first woman, from Adam’s rib to be his companion (Genesis 2:21–22). Together, they represent the first marriage and human family. - The Fall into Sin
Adam and Eve disobeyed God by eating from the forbidden tree after being tempted by the serpent. This act of disobedience is known as the Fall and introduced sin, death, and separation from God into the world (Genesis 3). - Father of Humanity
Adam is considered the father of all humans. All human beings descend from him.“And Adam called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.”

In the New Testament, Adam is contrasted with Jesus Christ. While sin entered the world through Adam, salvation and eternal life come through Jesus, the “last Adam” (1 Corinthians 15:45).“For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive.”

Adam is the first man, the beginning of humanity, and the one through whom sin entered the world. His story sets the stage for God’s redemptive plan through Jesus Christ.
