The First Testimony in the Bible – “It Was Very Good”

“Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good.”
 – Genesis 1:31, NKJV

Before there were prophets, miracles, or dramatic moments of deliverance in Scripture, there was this simple yet powerful testimony – spoken by God Himself. At the end of the six days of creation, God looked over everything He had made – the skies, the seas, the land, the animals, and humanity – and declared it very good.

This is the first testimony in the Bible. And it came not from man, but from the Creator. It wasn’t influenced by feelings, pressure, or circumstance. It was a divine statement of approval. God testified about His own work – and He was pleased.

What Makes This Testimony Important?

  1. It Reveals God’s Standard
God didn’t say creation was okay or acceptable. He said it was very good. This shows us that God delights in excellence, order, and purpose. Everything He made was intentional and complete – nothing was accidental.
  2. It Affirms Our Value
Humanity was created on the sixth day – right before this testimony. That means we, too, are part of what God called “very good.” This tells us that we have inherent value, not because of what we do, but because of who made us.
  3. It Shows God’s Joy in Creation
God’s declaration reflects delight, not just in what He made but in the process of creation itself. It tells us that God is not distant or mechanical – He’s deeply invested in His work and takes joy in it.

A Thought for Today

In a world where we are often told we are not enough, God’s first testimony in Scripture reminds us of the opposite. You are part of God’s “very good” creation. Though sin later marred that perfection, God’s original design – and His heart for humanity – has never changed.

So, when you feel uncertain about your worth, purpose, or place in the world, remember Genesis 1:31. God saw everything He had made, including you – and He called it very good.

Reflection:
What part of God’s creation makes you stop and say, “This is very good”? Take a moment today to thank Him for creating you with love, intention, and purpose.

Glory to God
